Trump and MAGA and Midterms

Bet you didn't expect this one

By Darryl Weng

For nearly 6 years, the MAGA movement stood its ground, absorbing the GOP and causing Democrats to go haywire. Yet, as the 2022 midterm results are being announced, MAGA has been greeted with absolute disappointment, disgust, and anger from the GOP.

But rightfully so. Trump and his movement, mainly inspired by his rhetoric, transformed his hopeful legacy into thin dust. What was supposed to be a fairy tale ending - where Trump’s policies and political accomplishments placed him well in the history books - turned into a nightmare. When the Jan. 6 Capitol Riot wasn’t enough, Trump took it to the next level by spreading his influence across the nation, completely destroying Republican candidate hopefuls to choose his own Republican candidates.

Surely he was confident, endorsing here and there without concern or doubt that he was going to rise again from his political slumber. He must have thought his influence would stretch across the nation like Vanderbilt’s railroads, buying out all the other competitors and gaining further traction. 2024 Presidential candidate? Without a doubt, he must have thought. But long did he know America was tired of the political tension, rhetoric, and actions of Donald Trump. No one wanted his drama and polarization that made Democrats go wild with support(Oops! Spoiler). 11 House candidates, 4 Senate candidates, and 10 governors endorsed by Trump suffered defeat. There was no red wave. Where was the two-thirds House majority? What about the slight 51-49 Senate majority?

So, of course, Trump won’t be let off so easily, with commentators such as National Review’s Charles C. W. Cooke and well-respected Republican figures such as Virginia Lt Gov. Winsome Sears engaging in fiery rhetoric to match their immeasurable disappointment.

So what now? Well, Trump is in the talks of being indicted and surely won’t have much support in the face of the Jan. 6 committee. Ron DeSantis has surpassed Trump in poll predictions for the 2024 GOP Presidential Primary. And, at the very least, the endless spending of the progressive agenda is near its end. One can say this outcome isn’t too bad, ignoring Trump’s fall to political ruin.

While it is perfectly logical to complain and express discontent at Trump’s midterm actions like nearly every other political commentator, it would be ignorant of me to ignore Trump’s accomplishments as President.

In fact, beyond Trump’s successful policies, Conservatives must thank Trump for his no-nonsense and blunt rhetoric that caught the attention of the working class across America. What couldn’t have been done with the likes of the GOP establishment’s Ted Cruz and soft-hearted Jeb Bush was accomplished with the words “Make America Great Again.” Hillary Clinton’s cowboy boots and Texan accents didn’t move Texan workers one bit. Yet, Trump and his New York suit took Texas by storm.

America’s working class made sure their support for Trump was heard across the nation. When the Republican Party found itself losing voters from white-collar America after Obama’s Democratic Party swooned nearly all of them, Trump gave the GOP a new identity and a dedicated group of supporters.

No doubt, Trump will be in the history books, great or not. He has cemented himself as one of the biggest 21st figures and created new political terms and ideologies that will be referenced in future history classes. MAGA may have lost its steam, but our great-great-grandchildren will know how iconic our era is.

RIP 2016-2022.

Dear my ex MAGA,

You were lovely, but you had to go. You lifted me up from my darkest times, but you put me right back there.
