What GOP means to America

By Darryl Weng

The GOP presidency is over. The pandemic is nearing its end. The American people are beginning to experience the norm again. Time has changed and, yet, the GOP still thrives. And despite the backlash it has received from the Left these recent years, the GOP still holds onto its belief in protecting our constitution, valuing our freedoms, making America a stronger nation, and, most of all, promoting conservative values across the nation.

The media has attacked the GOP consistently over the years, not to mention our entertainment industry already making cynical comments about the GOP. But it's simply the GOP's nature.

As William F. Buckley Jr., the founder of National Review, once said: "A Conservative is a fellow who is standing athwart history yelling 'Stop!'"

There may be quite a few politicians of the GOP that do not hold true to their conservative values, but the GOP is made up of a swath of conservative politicians who stand "athwart history."

Today, we see that those who stand "athwart history" are the likes of DeSantis, Noem, and Barr. When other governors demanded lockdowns, DeSantis refused, making Floridian residents economically and psychologically superior to those of other states. Even when critics and deaths across the nation only solidified the view of lockdowns and restrictions for pandemic safety, DeSantis proved critics wrong by showing America how a single state recovered remarkably from COVID. When defunding police was recognized with widespread support from several states and nearly the entire media, Noem refused to follow such actions. Instead, Noem did the opposite, even reaching out to police officers in states that defunded police to join South Dakota's prized police force. And so Noem was loved by her people, a person who believed the police were vital to America's safety. When the most powerful people in the country like Trump and Pelosi criticized and jeered at Barr, Barr refused to allow his Justice Department to perform partisan duties. Barr may be politically conservative, but he did not allow his duty to protect the constitution to turn into ashes. Barr may have resigned for family reasons, but Barr has left his mark on the Justice Department, emphasizing duty and honor. DeSantis, Noem, and Barr are examples of men and women who do not kowtow to the current overall consensus of opinions. They, like many others of the GOP stand athwart history.

The GOP may be unpopular now, but the future may tell otherwise. Unlike other parties globally, the GOP stays true to itself. No matter how the irritable the Left views Trump or how the GOP treats their own party member Liz Cheney with contempt, the values that GOP members remain the same - values of freedom, constitutional rights, and conservatism. No matter where the GOP stands in today's political spectrum, the GOP remains grand, old, and one of the key standard-bearers of true American values.
